Getting personal with our Doll of The Month

D.O.L.L.S: What simple gesture that you recently witnessed has renewed your hope in humanity?

Lindsay: Just recently I was in a grocery store parking lot, and noticed an elderly woman trying to push a heavy cart to her car.  A group of young men were walking by her in the opposite way, and one of the young men stopped, and asked her if she needed any assistance.  She seemed very grateful for the offer and he not only pushed woman’s cart to her car, but helped her with her groceries, and helped her into the car.  I was very impressed by this simple act of kindness for two main reasons.  One, this young man went out of his way to help someone else when he did not have to.  Secondly, he was not ashamed to be proactive and help, despite being with a group of friends.  I think it is very important for the younger generations to look after and take care of our elders, and it is definitely very encouraging and refreshing to see that people still value that.

D.O.L.L.S: What is something new you recently learned about yourself?

Lindsay: One thing I’ve learned about myself is that I am more patient than I thought could be.  I have seen that as I mature and get older, I am more patient in certain circumstances and when dealing with others, because I am realizing that people were once patient with me.  Many of us would not be where we are today if we had not had someone take the time and be patient with us, and I am happy to start paying the gesture forward to others.

D.O.L.L.S: How would you spend your ideal day?

Lindsay: My ideal day would probably consist of spending time with my family.  I have a big family and we have so much fun together, and any time I can spend with them is great.  Maybe a little shopping and good food in that day as well.  =)

D.O.L.L.S: If you had to be someone else for only one day, who would you be and why?

Lindsay: If I had to be someone else for a day I would definitely be Maya Angelou.  She has been such an inspirational role model for me ever since I was a little girl.  From reading all of her books, to hearing her speak at my cousin’s graduation from Morehouse School of Medicine, hearing her wisdom is a humbling and magical experience.  I believe a day, as this extraordinary woman would be life changing

Looking towards the future with our Doll of the Month....

D.O.L.L.S: What dream are you currently pursuing?

Lindsay: I am currently in my last semester of graduate school at the University of South Carolina where I am studying to get a Master’s degree in Public Health, with a concentration in Epidemiology.  After I graduate I plan to try and pursue medical school.

D.O.L.L.S: What are the first steps you took to follow your dreams?
Lindsay: The first steps I took to follow my dreams were researching what I was interested in and making a list of things needed to accomplish, such as classes I would need to take and even making a timeline of when I would like to accomplish my goals.
D.O.L.L.S: What are some road blocks that you have come across?
Lindsay: Some road blocks I have come across are negative people.  As you will always encounter throughout life, I have found that some people will try to bring you down with their negativity.  I have found that “loving my enemies” always helps the situation.  Once they realize that they can’t take away your happiness with rude comments or talking about you, they get the picture and stop.  As they always say, kill ‘em with kindness. =D
D.O.L.L.S: Who are some individuals in your field you admire and would like to
work with in the future?

Lindsay: I admire Drs. Sampson Davis, Rameck Hunt and George Jenkins, also known as The Three Doctors.  These three friends grew up together in circumstances that, according to society, would not allow them to dream, have success, or even be guaranteed to live past their adolescence.  It is truly inspiring to know that at a young age, these friends made a pact to all go to medical school, and they were able to achieve their goals. Dr. Sampson Davis said, “Strength comes from knowing that the power to overcome adversity and prevail lies within one’s self and you have to first realize that. Once realized, you have to accept accountability for your life and take the necessary steps to turn hopes and dreams into realities.”  I believe with that mentality anything is possible.

D.O.L.L.S: Is there anything that you’d like our readers to learn from you?

Lindsay: I’d like your readers to know that it is important to dream big.  The only limits you have are those that you put on yourself.  It takes hard work to get where you want to be, and when you reach your goals, they will be that much sweeter and the feeling of accomplishment will be amazing.

D.O.L.L.S: What are your future career goals and aspirations? How are you progressing towards those goals?

Lindsay: My future career goals and aspirations are to continue on the road to medical school.  I especially want to help the underserved and less fortunate.  I have done a lot of volunteer work in homeless shelters and hospitals, and it has really helped open my eyes to all different kinds of people and the situations their in.

D.O.L.L.S: What motto do you live by?

Lindsay: Live, love, and laugh.  I think that with this life we are blessed with, we should live life to the fullest.  We must also remember to always try and love, whether it be the people around us, or just loving and appreciating a beautiful day.  As Maya Angelou said, “I am grateful to have been loved and to be loved now and to be able to love, because that liberates. Love liberates. It doesn't just hold—that's ego. Love liberates.”  And lastly laugh…as we’ve all heard, laughing is good for the soul.  If I can make someone smile or laugh, it makes me feel good, because that happiness is contagious, simply can’t be held in. =)

D.O.L.L.S: How do you stay motivated to accomplish your goals?

Lindsay: I definitely think that my faith plays a big part in my motivation to accomplish my goals.  I know that God has a plan for me and I try and encourage myself everyday to achieve great things.  I also have amazing support from my family and close friends.  They are the ones that love and encourage you even on what you feel are your worst days, and it’s amazing how that support can uplift your spirit.

D.O.L.L.S: What can we look forward to from you in the future?

Lindsay: Great and wonderful things!  To make an impact on our world is my highest aspiration, and I look forward to working towards that dream!
