July Doll of the Month: Ashley

Getting to Know our DOLL!

D.O.L.L.S: If you could be given ANY gift what would it be?
Ashley: A complete year to travel the world! There are so many amazing sights to see and cultures to learn about. Of course, there has to be a great travel buddy included. That would be the ultimate gift for me!

D.O.L.L.S: What’s your favorite way to wake up and what’s the first thing you do?

Ashley: I have this silly ritual to wake up. I set my alarm clock one hour early, then 15 minutes early then for the actual time I need to wake up. I still end up laying in the bed for another 10 minutes after that. I guess you can tell I am not a morning person at all! Once I finally get up, the first thing I do is say “Thank you Lord for waking me up” (my mom taught me this at a young age) and cut on some music to get energized for the day ahead!

D.O.L.L.S: If you were an ice cream flavor what would you be?
Ashley: A strawberry shortcake bar, I love those!

D.O.L.L.S: How do you tackle stressful situations in your life?
Ashley: Stress really could be my middle name. I get stressed out about the most ridiculous things sometimes. Thankfully, I have a great support system that always reminds me things could be a lot worst. The saying goes, “If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.” Sometimes I just have to take a deep breath and figure out what I can do to alleviate some of the stress. If it is something that is completely out of my control, I have no choice but to roll with the punches. (Kirk Franklin and Beyonce Pandora stations along with a large sweet tea are helpful in those cases!)

Looking Towards the Future with our Doll of the Month…
D.O.L.L.S: What dream are you currently pursuing?
Ashley: I have been planning parties and events for the past year which has always been a dream of mine. It’s amazing how simply asking questions and networking can bring some great opportunities your way. Photography is a hobby of mine that somehow has landed me the resident photographer job in my community so I am beginning to get my feet wet with that as well. I am also preparing to go to grad school in 2012. I plan to get a Masters in Mass Communications. I am so excited and nervous about this new chapter! In my spare time, I travel as much as I possibly can!

D.O.L.L.S: What are the first steps you took to follow your dreams?

Ashley: Well, first I had to figure out what really makes me happy and what my strengths are. I have always been a creative person. I have always loved to plan and organize. I never thought of that as a gift until I started to realize just how many people do not have the patience or the time to really plan. That’s the fun part to me! The past year and a half I have been blessed with great opportunities to plan and organize several events. Last summer I drove to Atlanta every other weekend to do an internship with an event planner just to have the experience in a bigger city. I want to be able to do what I love full-time….that is my motivation! Furthering my education is a vital stepping stone towards that goal. A Masters in Mass Communications will help put me in a great position to do Event Planning, Public Relations and possibly Marketing for large companies. They all fall under that umbrella and it is great to have options.

D.O.L.L.S: What are some roadblocks that you have come across?

Ashley: When you get to a road block, it usually means you make a u-turn. It’s so easy to allow something to discourage you from even trying to pursue your dream because it seems “too hard”. I prefer to view those things as obstacles or challenges to overcome. Not knowing exactly what I want to do career wise has, by far, been my greatest challenge. Creative minds tend to go all over the place. Every other day there’s a new idea or direction to go in. I never want to limit my abilities but it really helps to be able to focus on one thing at a time in order to have some direction.

D.O.L.L.S: Who are some individuals in your field you admire and would like to work with in the future?
Ashley: Focusing on event planning, there are well-known planners such as David Tutera that are awesome at what they do and famous for it. On the other hand, there are so many that are behind the scenes and that do not get the credit that they deserve. An event planner takes the fall for everything, whether it was their fault or not, and they get little public credit for the good things. I admire those people because they truly have passion for what they do.

D.O.L.L.S: Is there anything that you’d like our readers to learn from you?
Ashley: Life is truly what you make it! If you really want something bad enough, make a plan and go get it! Do not wake up expecting your dreams to be handed to you. It takes a lot of hard work, determination, dedication, and faith to make things happen. In the end, those are the things that are most rewarding! Define what success is for yourself, not what it is according to everyone else.

Send out positive energy! If you are always focusing on the negatives, how do you expect to see the positives? The best way to do this is to surround yourself with positive, uplifting people.

Make it a point to help others on a daily basis, especially people that are less fortunate than you. It is an eye-opener and a great reminder of the small things that are constantly taken for granted. It benefits them and you.

Lastly, live the life that YOU love! Take the time to really enjoy the moment you are in and the people that you love! There is only one YOU, embrace that!

D.O.L.L.S: What advice do you have for young women your age?
Ashley: What God has for you, is for you! No matter how hard they may try, no one can ever take that away from
you.

D.O.L.L.S: At this point in your life, what makes you happiest?
Ashley: God and my family will always be my foundation for happiness. These are my sources of unconditional love. Personal growth and spiritual growth constantly renew my happiness. Traveling puts me into another state of happiness. I let go of all of my worries and simply enjoy life!

D.O.L.L.S: What motto do you live by?
Ashley: I love quotes! I could spend an entire day just reading great quotes. (Maybe one day I will write a book full of my favorite quotes and experiences) One in particular that I am constantly reminded of is, “He did not bring me this far to leave me”.....No matter what is going on in my life, this always puts things in perspective. This is definitely a principle that I live by. It does not allow me to give up.

D.O.L.L.S: How do you stay motivated to accomplish your goals?
Ashley: I know that I have a purpose; otherwise I would not be here. I don’t want to waste the gifts given to me. I want to use them to make a positive difference in this world and in someone else’s life any way I can. I have had so many wonderful mentors in my life, personally and professionally, that have made a positive difference in my life. I strive to be able to do the same for others. Not too long ago, an older person told me that I inspired them to really pursue a dream that they have had for years just because of the initiative I am taking to pursue mine. To inspire someone….that has to be one of the best feelings in the world!

D.O.L.L.S: What can we look forward to from you in the future?
Ashley: Professionally, I am determined to get my Master’s degree in the next couple of years and I will continue to use my gifts to help others. Personally, I am a work in progress. I want to continue learning and growing every day for the rest of my life. Beyond that, God’s plan is way better than mine so I will patiently wait for the next move. Expect great things, because I certainly do!
