Beauty DIY: Natural Hair Dye

Published on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 in , ,

Even though, henna powder is generally used to apply body art, applying Henna powder to your hair proves to be a natural and healthy way to color your hair without the use of harmful chemicals. When using henna, you need to prepare it the day before you intend to dye your hair. When preparing your henna, make sure you mix the powder with just enough lemon juice to make a thick paste, and then leave it covered overnight with plastic wrap.

The next day you will need to apply the henna to your hair (like you would apply any other dye product or relaxer). Make sure that your hair is totally saturated with the henna product, and to prevent stains from the dye, you may apply lotion or vaseline around your hair line to keep the henna from getting on your skin.

After you've applied the henna paste, cover your hair with a plastic cap, and let it process for 2 - 4 hours without heat. Then shampoo your hair with a moisturizing shampoo and moisturizing conditioner to remove the excess henna. Since henna treatments are very similar to protein treatments, they tend to strengthen your hair while drying it out so it is very important to follow your henna treatment with both a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner!

After all that is done, enjoy your permanent yet natural henna dye!

Note: When using henna make sure you test a patch of skin before applying it to your entire head to make sure you are not allergic. Also, make sure to do a strand test on a small section of hair to make sure you like the color that the dye makes your hair!
