Transitioning Part I - Twists, Curls, & Braided Hairstyles

Published on Friday, September 16, 2011 in , , , , , ,

Over the past few months I've been going through many transitions, my hair being one of them!  I decided to go natural so that I would not have to rely on a relaxer for the rest of my life.  I got a relaxer at the age of  11 so I've had it for over 10 years.  I got my last relaxer in April just in time for graduation, and I haven't looked back since!  I purposely waited until graduation ( I got a dual Master's in Social Work & Public Health (Health Promotion, Education, & Behavior)) to transition back to my natural hair simply because it was the easiest way for me to do it.  I tricked myself into thinking I would do it my first year of graduate school not really knowing the proper steps.  Needless to say that ended in hair breakage and me returning to relaxers in less than 2 months LOL!

I have super thick and super coarse type 4 hair.  I absolutely love it and get frustrated with it at the same time:--)  Transitioning is a process, but I am learning to be more comfortable with it. I am relaxing into the uncertainty of it all (that's my go to phrase for all of the change taking place in my life :-)).  I didn't do anything drastic like doing a big chop or anything, but that's just a personal choice of mine (plus I don't have the smallest head LOL).  Somethings that I are working for me are moisturizing, protective styles ( I need these b/c I like to comb my hair which is probably the biggest NO NO when transitioning), washing my hair in sections, combing from tip to root, drinnking water, researching, positive thinking, and did I say moisturizing?(LOL this is a HUGE must!)  I hope this helps someone else who is thinking about transitioning. Below I will include some products I've used (I'm just a beginner), some natural hair websites I enjoy, and of course pics of my hair! Enjoy!
